Has the Era of Human Rights Passed? Kenyan human rights defender and former UN Special Rapporteur Mr. Maina Kiai talks about the future of human rights in a post-pandemic world.

Were we too optimistic about the triumph of human rights? What has changed and how can we defend human rights and civic space together?

Maina Kiai’s talks are full of power and inspiration and he has a profound understanding of civil societies globally. He is a long-time human rights activist from Kenya and served as the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association from 2011 to 2017. Kiai is a founding member of Human Rights Watch’s Alliances and Partnerships programme, founder of Kenyan Civil Society Organization InformAction, and a member of Facebook’s Global Oversight Board.

Mr. Kiai speaks online at the World Village Festival on Sunday, 30 May at 16:40-17:10 Eastern European Time. KIOS Expert Ms. Saara Frestadius will host the event.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the entire World Village Festival turns online. Visitors will sign in using their personal email addresses and names. The festival platform and the sign-in page will open on Friday 28 May at 12 noon at maailmakylassa.fi
