Former UN Special Rapporteur Mr. Maina Kiai talked about the future of human rights in a post-pandemic world in an online event produced by KIOS for the World Village Festival in Helsinki in May.

Kiai spoke on the effects of the pandemic to human rights and how we can defend civil society and human rights together in this time. He also brought up Finland’s role in all of this and how it can be a model country for human rights and democracy.

Kiai warned that Finnish people should not take democracy for granted. Finland should also channel developmental co-operation funds to civil society, because they are in a key position at the grassroots level to address issues.

Kiai’s message to human rights actors was that there must be more co-operation. There is too much work done in silos. Market fundamentalism must also be addressed collectively.

KIOS Expert Ms. Saara Frestadius hosted the event.
