Every Brave Act Begins with a Person

Working at KIOS has really opened my eyes to what defending human rights actually means. It’s not just slogans, campaigns, or numbers in a report. It’s people who decide to act, even when it’s difficult or even dangerous. These are the people we wanted to highlight more strongly through the Support Brave Actions campaign.
A human rights defender can be any one of us
Every day, all around the world, people are working so that everyone has the right to live a life of dignity and freedom. These people are human rights defenders, and they can be found everywhere in the world.
A human rights defender is simply someone who, in one way or another, promotes and protects human rights. Many of them work locally, in their own communities, sometimes without even defining themselves that way. What matters most are the actions.
At the same time, the reality of human rights work is harsh. We know that every year, more than 600 human rights defenders are killed or go missing because of their work. That’s a number that’s hard to fully grasp.
One way to support human rights defenders is to make sure they are seen and heard. Each of us can help strengthen their voice.
Individual Voices but a Shared Message
When we started putting the campaign together, we wanted to create space for the brave human rights defenders whose work we support. When we reached out to our grantees and shared the idea behind the campaign, I didn’t quite know what to expect. Some interest for sure, but maybe also some short replies in the middle of their busy human rights work.
That’s why it was such a lovely surprise how quickly and warmly our grantees got involved.
The reactions were encouraging, enthusiastic, and above all, full of a willingness to share why we do this work and why each of is choosing to defend human rights. It reminded me once again that even though our contexts and realities are different, the core idea is the same: human rights belong to everyone, everywhere.
Human rights should never depend on power, money, gender identity, or social status.

Every Action Matters
Sometimes talking about human rights can feel distant. But in reality, it’s about very fundamental things: safety, dignity, and the ability to live your life freely.
And these rights don’t just happen on their own.
Through KIOS work, we’ve seen what long-term support can achieve:
- hundreds of supported human rights projects around the world
- dozens of organisations able to continue their work even in difficult conditions
- over a million people whose everyday lives have been directly impacted
But in the end, it’s not just about numbers. It’s about someone, somewhere, deciding to act.
On the Side of Brave Actions
We often think of courage as something big and extraordinary. But maybe courage is also something smaller: choosing to speak up instead of staying silent. Sharing information. Standing beside someone. Even the biggest things usually start with small actions. That’s what defending human rights is, too.
This campaign is one way to move toward that. To make visible the people and actions that might otherwise remain unseen.
And that’s why we’re inviting you to join us in supporting brave actions and the work of human rights defenders, now and in the future.
